Americans Waiting for An Unemployment Extension
Among the present lingering unemployment situation, the House of representatives on Thursday voted 270-153 in favour of an unemployment extension using Fed funds.
The bill would permit jobless claims till November and will also allow more than 1 million petitioners whose payments ran out in June to get back their benefits retroactively.
The Senate, who is on recess till mid-July, will now have to review and pass the bill before presenting it to President Obama for signing. The chamber was mostly skeptical about using Fed money for an unemployment extension bill that can contribute to the present budget deficiency.
The majority of Republicans disagreed that $34 bln bucks put aside for the extension must be gotten from the economic stimulus programme. They shot down a revived Senate version of the bill on Wed. because of deficit concerns.
The left wingers slipped one vote shy of the needed 60 majority votes for the bill to pass. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said that they'll resurrect the bill in mid-July, after a substitute for Senator Byrd, who died recently, is selected.
The Congress has been a battlefield for both parties nervous about having to balance between helping unwaged get unemployment extension and additional benefits, and the present $1.4 trillion deficiency and $13 trillion debt.
The Republicans wish to win back concerned citizens for the upcoming congressional elections in November to regain control over Congress.
The unemployment information released on Monday showed the unwaged rate at a high 10%. New claims for state unemployment benefits suddenly rose by 13,000, according to the labor dept. The June work report is to be released soon.
